Legal basis
The most important laws governing the compatibility of caring for relatives and working are the Care Leave Act (PflegeZG) and the Family Care Leave Act (FPfZG). These laws list options for reducing workloads.
Care Leave Act (PflegeZG):
- Short-term leave: Up to ten working days for close relatives in acute care situations to organize care.
- Long-term care leave: Leave from work for up to six months to provide home care for a close relative.
- Protection against dismissal: Special protection against dismissal applies during care leave.
Family Care Leave Act (FPfZG):
- Enables partial exemption from work for up to 24 months to care for a close relative in need of care.
Other important legal bases for protection are the Family Caregiver Relief Act and long-term care insurance.
Relief Act for Family Members
- Relieves children and parents of their financial maintenance obligations if the relative in need of care receives social assistance benefits; income is only taken into account if it exceeds €100,000 per year.
Long-term care insurance
- Social security: Ensures that family caregivers are covered by statutory pension, accident, and unemployment insurance.
